You've got four pancakes in your head, and unfortunately, they don't always agree. Survival worries about keeping you safe. Pattern wants things to make sense based on what it already knows. Social is concerned with other people. And Logic would appreciate it if everyone could please look at the evidence. The Pancake Stack determines which one gets the loudest voice when it's time to decide what to do.

Ever feel torn between wanting to be safe and wanting to be free? Or wanting to know the truth but not particularly wanting to hear it? Those are the kinds of tensions the Master Divides describe. There are four of them, and different people lean in different directions. Which explains why something that seems like an obvious choice to you can look like a terrible idea to somebody else.

The Forecast Chamber is where your machine works through the options, and some people come up with a lot more of them than others. One person sees two choices and makes a decision. Another is still considering what might happen if it rains on Thursday.

Why does something that seems easy to you look impossibly difficult to somebody else? Because your machines aren't necessarily counting the same costs. One person sees a quick phone call. Another sees an awkward conversation, a disappointed relative, and three days of thinking about it afterward. True Cost is what your machine expects a choice to cost you, including things that don't have a price tag. And sometimes doing nothing looks pretty expensive too.

You've considered the options, gone back and forth, and finally decided what you're going to do. Congratulations, you've made it through the Commit Gate. This is where your machine stops comparing choices long enough to pick one. It doesn't mean you've chosen wisely, and it certainly doesn't mean everyone else will approve. It just means your machine has settled on something it can go forward with.

Ever decide you're going to handle something calmly, then discover that calm has apparently left the building? That's where the Dashboard comes in. It reflects how worked up your machine is and how much flexibility you have while trying to carry out a decision. The more worked up you get, the harder it may be to change course, even when changing course would be an excellent idea.

Ever listen to two people explain the same argument and wonder whether they were even in the same room? That's the Storyboard at work. It's how your machine puts together the story of what happened and why. And because it isn't a video recording, some details get emphasized, others disappear, and the finished story can make perfect sense to the person telling it, even when nobody else recognizes the event.

Your machine doesn't start from scratch every morning. It carries things forward from what you've experienced before, including lessons you may not even remember learning.
