It’s not that hard
Two friends spend a Saturday afternoon at IKEA. They wander through the showroom, argue briefly about whether they really need another bookshelf, eventually buy the same model, load two identical flat boxes into separate cars, and drive home. That evening one of them sends a text, "Finished in about forty-five minutes." A few minutes later the other replies, "It took me almost four hours." The first friend laughs and writes back, "Really? It’s not that hard."
It's such an ordinary sentence that most of us barely notice it. We've all said some version of it. It isn’t that hard if you just follow the instructions. The bookshelf is exactly the same, along with the pieces and the instructions. Nothing about the task itself appears like it could change, so the explanation seems obvious. If one person finishes quickly and another struggles, the difference is with the people.
The idea feels so reasonable because it quietly contains an assumption. It assumes that building the bookshelf costs both people the same thing. Not the same amount of money or the same amount of time. The same psychological cost.
If it requires forty-five minutes of concentration for me, then it should require roughly forty-five minutes of concentration for you. If I found the instructions straightforward, then they should be straightforward for you. If I made one mistake and laughed about it, then making one mistake should feel equally insignificant to you. Without realizing it, I begin measuring your experience using the operating costs of my own machine.
The difficulty is that people never experience reality directly. They experience what reality requires from their particular system.
One person effortlessly rotates the diagrams in their head and immediately understands how the pieces fit together. Another has to keep turning the page back and forth because every drawing takes a little longer to decode. One shrugs when they install a panel backward, takes it apart, and starts again. Another immediately begins wondering whether they've ruined the entire project, whether they're wasting the afternoon, whether they should have paid for assembly in the first place. One enjoys solving little mechanical puzzles. Another experiences every unexpected step as mounting friction. The bookshelf never changed, just the operating cost did.
Once you notice this, the sentence begins appearing everywhere. "It’s not that hard." Just make the phone call. Just ask for the promotion. Just leave the relationship. Just skip junk food. Just apologize. Just say no. Just start exercising. Just ignore what they said.
Every one of these statements assumes that another person's future costs the same amount to live as our own. We rarely notice ourselves making that substitution because our own cost calculation feels so obvious that it disappears. We aren't intentionally judging someone else's machine. We simply don't realize we've quietly inserted our own.
This may explain why so many misunderstandings seem impossible to resolve. We usually assume we're disagreeing about reality when we're actually disagreeing about what reality costs. One person sees a five-minute phone call. Another sees possible rejection, embarrassment, conflict, uncertainty, and hours of emotional recovery afterward. One person sees a simple conversation. Another sees the possibility of damaging a relationship they've spent twenty years trying to preserve. The event is shared, but the projected burden isn’t.
That’s also why advice so often fails. Advice usually describes what another person should do after we've already priced the future using our own machine. "Just tell them." "Just move on." "Just stop worrying." The advice often makes perfect sense inside the speaker's cost calculation. It simply doesn't match the one producing the other person's behavior.
Judgment quietly begins the same way. Someone behaves differently than we would have, so we assume they must care less, think less clearly, lack discipline, or simply be making poor decisions. Those explanations feel convincing because we unknowingly started with the wrong calculation. We assumed they were paying the same invisible price we would have paid.
The interesting question is no longer whether the bookshelf was difficult. Who is paying more? That small change turns out to matter almost everywhere. The next time someone says, "It’s not that hard," listen carefully to what they're really saying. They aren't describing the task itself. They're describing what the task cost their machine.
